Location of the C&LE crossing of the Great Miami River in south Middletown, looking southeast towards Trenton. This bridge was built in 1912 as part of the Trenton and Excello bypasses, which removed street running in Trenton and bypassed the low-lying, flood-prone, and sparsely populated Excello neighborhood. The bridge was destroyed in the 1913 flood, and a temporary wooden trestle was built to the north (right) of the old concrete abutments, some of which were undermined by the flood and deemed too dangerous to reuse. The wooden trestle was never replaced, and was in use until abandonment in 1939. The wood piles remain in the river, and you can see how debris gets jammed up on them to this day.
