NYC/CCC&St. L - New York Central/Big Four, Whitewater Division - Indiana & Ohio, Brookville Subdivision
Whitewater Canal Duck Creek aqueduct in Metamora, looking west along Main Street. This is the only covered wooden aqueduct in the United States. The first aqueduct was built at this site in 1843 but it was destroyed by a flood in 1848. It was strengthened in 1868 after the canal was shifted to hydraulic use, and in 1901 it was repaired and raised to a slightly higher elevation. In 1939 the floor of the trough collapsed and the structure sat derelict. It was restored between 1946 and 1949 and has received routine maintenance since the 1970s. Most recently in 2005 the trough was replaced.
