Notice how the street gets about 18" wider just past the lamp post on the right, then narrows back again at the first parked car. That indicates that there was a streetcar stop here, and the curb line was pushed outward to allow room for cars and wagons to bypass the passenger loading platform that flanked the tracks in the middle of the street. Since today's bus stops are usually in the same place as the original streetcar stop, these little alcoves provide some extra room for the bus to pull over to the side.
