Historic photo of 5th and Lock Streets at the base of the Mt. Adams Incline. The horse and carriage is on Eggleston at the very very bottom. The wood bridge for 5th Street appears to be traversing what little is left of the long-abandoned Miami & Erie Canal at this location. While the main part of the canal remained navigable until the 1920s, the run from Broadway, at what would later become the Hamilton County Justice Center and the Casino, and the Ohio River required a 100' drop and nine locks. Since canal boats couldn't navigate the Ohio River anyway, this segment of the canal had been effectively disused since the 1860s.
